Ricochet

Ricochet is a 173,000 word epic page-turner, telling the story of a control freak sub and a wayward dom, and their journey towards finding each other – and themselves in the process. It has all the angst, humour, drama and sexiness of my BDSM universe stories. Can you spot all the little references and nods to some of my most well-known fanfiction stories? Buy now and find out!

Please leave a nice review on the site where you bought it if you enjoy the novel! Lots of stars would be lovely too!!! You can also leave a review on this site (below). And please shout about it from the rooftops in your LJ, blogs, Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter accounts. Spread the word! Thank you so much for your support, as always. You guys rock! With Smashwords, when you buy it you automatically get several different file formats so you can read on a variety of devices so if you like reading in a fanfiction type way, on your computer screen, that’s the one to go for. If you’re going to do that then I’d recommend reading it in PDF format as the RTF one is buggy although still readable.

When the right dom is all wrong!

Even in a BDSM universe, where everyone identifies as dom or sub, finding the right partner isn’t always easy.

Matt is a big star on the hit TV show, Collar Crime, and he’s looking for a dom who ticks all the right boxes, including being as tidy and organised as himself.

That definitely isn’t his chaotic co-star, Rick, with his spanking fetish and habit of tying a different sub to his bed every night.

When Matt meets the perfect dom he’s swept off his feet, but he soon discovers that being pursued by a handsome, controlling billionaire isn’t the erotic fantasy he’d imagined.

Maybe the right dom for him is the one he thought was all wrong…

Matt wrapped a towel around his waist and emerged into the spare bedroom to see a clean tee shirt lying on the bed. He pulled it on to find it more or less fitted him. He looked at himself in the mirror and sighed as he saw the words emblazoned on it: You want to spank me, and you know it! They were the words of an infuriatingly catchy pop song that everyone had been singing a few months ago.  Still, it was better than his liquor-stained shirt, so he decided to go with it.

He walked down the stairs and found Rick in the kitchen, brewing some coffee. He had showered and dressed, too – in a pair of black jeans and a tight crimson shirt that hugged his body almost
obscenely. There was the usual assortment of leather thong bracelets around his wrists, and he was wearing his favorite thumb ring. A gold ear cuff clung to his left ear, attached by a chain to a ruby ear stud with a long scarlet crystal spike hanging from it. As usual, Matt felt decidedly under-dressed beside him.

“Thanks – shit, I need this,” Matt said, taking the mug of black coffee that Rick handed to him.

“You’re welcome, and you’re right, I do.” Rick winked at him, nodding his head at the slogan emblazoned on his chest.

“Hah hah hah hah hah.” Matt glared at him. “Was this really the only spare tee shirt you had?”

“Nah, but I liked the idea of you wearing that slogan.” Rick grinned. “Also, it’s a great shade of blue on you – brings out the color of your eyes. Plus, it actually fits.” He stood back and surveyed Matt critically. “It’s not mine – some sub left it here a few months ago.”

Matt took a sip of his coffee. “And they never came back for it?”

“Nah – I never invite subs back. It complicates things.”

“Really? Never?” Matt glanced at him over the rim of his mug, startled. “I mean, I know you get through a lot of subs, but you never see them again after?”

“Nope. I don’t do reruns. Once is fun, but twice starts to feel like we’re dating, and I don’t date.”

“Why not?”

“Why?” Rick countered with a grin.

“I don’t know – lots of reasons: intimacy, friendship, affection… love?”

“I’ve got friends for that. Relationships just complicate things. That’s why I’ve got my no reruns policy.”

“Wow – those are some massive commitment issues you’ve got there, O’Shea.”

“I freely admit it. Now, if you’ve finished guzzling that coffee – take this.” Rick handed him a motorcycle helmet.

Matt stared at it blankly. “Uh… why?”

“Because I don’t trust that you’re sober enough to drive yet, so you’ll be my passenger on the bike.”

“I’m not sober enough to drive, but you are?” Matt raised an eyebrow.

“I only had one glass of wine. You were knocking it back.”

“I’m fine. There is no way I’m getting on that stupid bike with you.”

“Tough.” Rick’s expression changed, and he folded his arms across his chest. “Because there is no way I’m letting you get behind the wheel of a car right now.”

Rick was usually very easygoing, so Matt had expected him to shrug and give in, but it seemed that he really did mean it about him not driving. He might have a point – Matt had drunk a lot only a few hours ago; it probably wasn’t entirely safe for him to drive yet.

“Why don’t you drive my car, then?” Matt held up the keys.

“What’s the matter…? Oh, wait.” Rick rolled his eyes. “You’ve never been on a motorcycle before, have you?”

“Well… no,” Matt admitted. “They always seem noisy, and dangerous, and -”

“Fun and exciting?” Rick raised an eyebrow. “You know, I don’t think there’s nearly enough fun and excitement in your ordered little life.”

“And I don’t think there’s nearly enough order and routine in your freewheeling existence,” Matt retorted.

Rick laughed. “You could be right, but we can’t all be as perfect as you. C’mon – let’s get moving. I can’t be late for work today after Petra’s dressing down yesterday.”

Matt took the helmet and followed Rick into the hallway. Rick paused to shoulder himself into his long, black leather coat, while Matt grabbed his scarf and put on his own much less dramatic denim jacket, and they went to the front door. Rick opened it… and they both froze as a dozen camera bulbs flashed at them.

“Rick, Rick – any comment about what happened down at the Justice Hall last night?” a reporter yelled.

Matt stood there, open-mouthed, taking in the sight of the crowd of journalists camped out on Rick’s front drive, complete with brightly flashing cameras.

“D
amn it – I forgot to lock the gates when I got home last night,” Rick muttered.

“Are you worried about your job, Rick?” someone called.

“Do you think Petra Davies will fire you over this?”

“Rick – are you and Matthew Lake having an affair?”

“What?” Matt exploded.

The journalist who’d yelled that out grinned at him. “Well, you stayed over last night, and that isn’t the shirt you were wearing when you arrived.”

“How did you…?”

“Forget it, Matt. They just want to get a quote out of you,” Rick told him quietly. He took hold of Matt’s hand and dragged him across the driveway towards his Harley. “Have you never dealt with the paparazzi before?” Rick asked as they walked.

“Well… not like this, no. Have you?” Matt asked, shocked.

“Plenty of times, but that’s because I’m always doing stupid things and drawing attention to myself, whereas the most gossip you’ve ever given them is going out for a meal with your boring accountant dom, followed by a quiet night in.”

“That is not…” Matt began, and then he sighed. “Okay, that is true.”

“Matt! Does this mean you’ve split up from Emily Campanillo? Or doesn’t she know that you’re sleeping with Rick?”

“What the hell business is that of yours? And I am NOT sleeping with Rick!” Matt rounded on the journalist angrily. Rick took Matt’s helmet out of his hand, placed it on his head, and began buckling it up under his chin.

“Is it true she offered you her collar, but you turned her down because you’re secretly in love with Rick?”

“No! Where on earth do you get this shit?”

“Matty – I’ve told you, just stay calm and say nothing,” Rick hissed, fastening the helmet a little too tight, in what felt like an effort to gag him.

“No way! I am not letting them get away with making up stuff about me!”

“Matt – how does it feel to be another notch on Rick O’Shea’s bedpost?” someone yelled. “Do you feel cheap and dirty now? He’s had just about every other sub in town, after all.”

Matt saw red. He jerked away from Rick and stormed across the driveway… only to find himself suddenly walking on air, his feet kicking out uselessly beneath him as a strong arm latched around his body and swung him off the ground.

“What the hell…?” Matt hollered, as Rick threw him over his shoulder, cave-dom style, and carried him back to the bike.

He plunked Matt on it, jumped on behind him, and put his arms around Matt to grab the handlebars, trapping Matt there. “Now shut up and stay still,” Rick ordered, revving up the bike.

“But I -”

“Quiet!” Rick thundered. He twisted the throttle impatiently, and the bike roared out of the driveway and onto the road, leaving a trail of scattered journalists in its wake.

Q & A

How did Ricochet first come about?

The last novel-length story I wrote was Two Wolves in 2011, and that was a very dark story, so I knew the next novel I wrote would be something lighter – that  just felt right to me. I’ve always written in various different styles and genres and often after writing one kind of story I’ll want to do a very different style and genre in my next story. It keeps me on my toes!

I actually started writing Ricochet in 2010, wrote a couple of thousand words, and then abandoned it because my urge to write NCIS fanfic was too strong at that point. Then I broke my leg badly in 2011 and during the 3 months I was unable to walk, some dear fandom friends helped me out on different weekends. One of them was Gloria Lancaster, and during her visit I told her about my idea for Ricochet. She loved it, and we had a great time discussing it. Inspired by her enthusiasm, I dug out what I’d started the previous year and took it further – to about 20,000 words this time. Then I hit a crisis of confidence and abandoned it once more to dive back into the safe, comfortable world of fanfic. Some conversations with another fandom friend, Flyingnorth, made me decide to go back to it, so I dug it out *again* in April 2012 and wrote it continuously from then until I finished it in Sept 2012.

I also roped in my more long distant fandom friends, Bluespirit and Haggy, to be audiencers along with Flyingnorth and Gloria Lancaster; between them they kept me going!

My betas are TG and The_Proofreader, and I’m very grateful to them both. I’m also grateful to the wonderful people who have followed my writing blog and generally offered their love, encouragement and support every step of the way. Special thanks to Jacci for not only designing the site but also for reading the novel and sending me wonderful, helpful feedback, and for being incredibly helpful
and encouraging through this whole process.

I view Ricochet very much as a transitional novel. It’s a lot of fun and in a way it’s kind of a love letter to fandom and to those people who have read every single one of my fanfic stories because there are lots of deliberate little nods and winks to fandom and to my other stories in there. I wanted to write something my fanfic readers would find familiar and reassuring; it’s set in a world they’re already familiar with – the BDSM universe, and it’s set in the world of TV shows which they are also very familiar with.

Why Ricochet?

I knew I wanted to write an original novel, but I wasn’t sure which one of the many in my head to start with! I toyed with a gay vampire novel, which I love and want to go back to, but I couldn’t get Ricochet out of my head, so I decided to go with it. I love the BDSM universe, and I knew it was familiar to my readers, so I hoped they’d enjoy this new foray into it.

What kind of a novel is it?

It’s a BDSM romance with lashings of angst thrown in! Matt and Rick’s dynamic is a little gentler than those of some of my other pairings perhaps. However, Rick is a spanking fanatic, so there is a lot of exploration of the different types of spanking – erotic and punishment. I loved doing that!

Can you tell us a bit more about Rick and Matt?

It’s a BDSM romance with lashings of angst thrown in! Matt and Rick’s dynamic is a little gentler than those of some of my other pairings perhaps. However, Rick is a spanking fanatic, so there is a lot of exploration of the different types of spanking – erotic and punishment. I loved doing that!

Rick is a big goofball with a dark side that he’s been hiding for many years. He’s laid back, good-natured and a lot of fun. However, he has a past – and it’s about to catch up with him. He makes one mistake after another, denial is his middle name, and his big challenge is to stop running and finally face up to who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be, because he does have a choice.

Matt has a fiery temper, but he’d go to the ends of the earth to protect someone he loves. He’s also anxious a lot of the time; he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, feels responsible even when he isn’t, and has an OCD problem that causes him to count compulsively.

Rick has buried his dom side almost completely because he’s afraid of it. He’s just playing at being a dom, going through the motions. He’s the kind of dom that Tony might have slept with and despised at the beginning of The First Collar, one who couldn’t make him feel anything or believe it to be real. Rick has no idea how to express that dom inside him who is desperate to get out.

Matt, on the other hand, longs to submit but his own personality gets in the way. He always has to be in control and can’t allow himself to let go even though he wants to, very much. If they can get over their differences, then Rick is the kind of dom that Matt could actually relax with, and, in topping Matt, Rick could learn to express the dom side of himself he’s been repressing for so long. On paper they shouldn’t work, but they could bring out the best in each other.

Can you tell us about any of the other characters in the novel?

Well, there are two antagonists who I loved creating; Rick has one nemesis, and Matt has another. Rick’s takes the form of someone from his past, and Matt’s takes the form of someone he considers to be the perfect dom, who ticks all the right boxes… One of them in particular has become one of my favourite villains of all my stories!

There is also a cast of what I hope are engaging supporting characters, including another couple who could feature in a possible sequel if I decide to go there!

Do people need to have read your other BDSM universe stories in order to understand Ricochet?

No. I deliberately constructed Ricochet to be completely accessible to those unfamiliar with the universe. All people need to know is that this is a universe where everyone is bisexual and identifies as dom or sub. That’s it! I introduce some familiar elements of the BDSM-verse during the course of the novel, such as sharing a plate, life-bonding etc, but in a way that I hope is accessible to a reader new to the universe without coming over as an info-dump to those who are familiar with it.

I’ve created a special BDSM Universe page for anyone wanting more information on the universe and the stories in it.

What readers are saying about Ricochet

I have to admit, I wasn’t too excited by this idea when Xanthe first mentioned it, being a long time fan of her darker fics, and I was even a little horrified at her announcement that she wasn’t writing a fanfic story and this would be an original character novel. So coming to it in trepidation I was incredibly delighted to find just how quickly it completely engaged me and how much I came to like the characters. It was so much funnier than I expected, and it really raced along too. Before I knew it I was in love with half the characters and hated the bad guys with a passion! What was also wonderfully unexpected, was just how many plot turns there were, keeping me guessing the entire time! The story was fabulous and the characters were awesome! From the first page to the very last was just the most pleasurable and enjoyable read I have had in a very long time. FANTASTIC!

Ricochet is a book that defies easy classification. It contains passionate scenes that leap off the page, but it is so much more than a conventional bodice-ripper. The well-developed, intricate plot grabs your attention and won’t let go, and the characters are both memorable and sympathetic (well, except for the villain!). What’s more, Xanthe’s masterfully crafted, entirely consistent and surprising
ly plausible ‘alternate universe’ will make you think. What if we didn’t live in a patriarchal, heteronormative world? How would a seemingly simple shift in prevailing patterns of interpersonal relationships influence the basic structures of society, including the organising principles of the modern state and the ways in which its power is exercised? This novel should be required reading for any student of gender and power.

What a story! Every character, every scene is so vivid and believable, I loved spending time with these gorgeous guys. Rick and Matt have captured my heart. The BDSM aspects are passionate and spicy – hot, phew, open a window! – but most of all this is a terrific love story, funny, engaging, romantic, sexy – all the things we know Xanthe does so well in her stories. With her usual flair, Xanthe carries the reader away into another world. I can’t wait to read more stories by this popular fan-favourite author. I’m just greedy I know but – when is the next book coming out?!

I absolutely loved this book – talk about a page turner! Xanthe may have created a fascinating alternate reality that flips our view of society on its head, but at the core is an emotionally rewarding and gripping romance about two people finding themselves – and each other. Xanthe’s world-building skills are fantastic, her sex scenes scorching hot, and her characters come to life on the page. She made me care about what was happening to these guys, and I followed Rick and Matt’s journey with my heart in my mouth at times; one moment ready to cry, the next laughing – and the next needing to turn on the A/C (I did mention the smoking hot sex scenes, didn’t I?) Not wanting to give away too much about the ending, let’s just say that the emotional payoff is perfect! Another tour de force from Xanthe!

I’ve been a follower of Xanthe’s BDSM universe for years and I’m delighted that she is finally going to publish her work. This story was quite different from her BDSM fan fiction stories which tend to be quite a bit darker in places. Rick is not a stereotypical Dom, he doesn’t act like a top all of the time although that is very much his dynamic in the bedroom. He has had a troubled past which makes commitment for him a terrifying idea. Matty is a sub with his own issues. He is frightened by his own dynamic and as such has engaged in relationships with Dominants who want servants more than lovers. He longs to be overpowered, restrained, brought to the heights of sexual arousal over and over but he just can’t give up control and the idea of Rick being his Dom? Well that’s just preposterous. The book twists and turns, it has you smiling one moment and growling at the bad guys the next. It’s a good long read which is another thing I love about Xanthe’s work, she never short changes her readers and gives them a story which holds their imagination for hours and hours. Anyone who reads Ricochet will not be disappointed I promise. Rick and Matty are just that good together, um when they finally get their acts together.

Thanks so much for the lovely review, Haggy! It was a joy sharing the novel with you ?

Absolutely fantastic. Best Xanthe story yet! Even better on the second read!!!

  3. McShepletGirl

I was so excited when I saw the book available on the 3rd….and I immediately bought it for my Kindle (reviewed and 5 star rated over on Amazon!)…this was at 6am…and I then read the first dozen or so chapters in bed..’I’ll get up after the next chapter…or the next…can’t leave yet – one more chapter!’
I’m now on my second read through! (For some chapters it will be a third read….I kept going back to reread favourite bits!)
It is just awesome! Seriously, I loved it!
There has to be a second Collar Crime book ….there just HAS to be! ….I don’t want to spoil this book for anyone else but there is a second pairing that I just HAVE to read about!…..and questions about RIck and Matt that I want answered! …The problem with making your characters ‘live’ is that they have a life beyond the story and I want to know more!…..I also have unresolved questions about RIck and Matt during the story – I’m wondering if I’ll find I somehow missed the answers to these when reading (the second and third and fourth readings should sort this out!….might mention them later….but don’t want to write any ‘spoilers’ here!)
I loved the little references to other Xanthe BDSM novels!
I was laughing out loud at some parts. And I was shouting out loud at others. (‘No Matty don’t do it!)….and yes, I confess I may have sobbed once or twice!
So….when is Collar Crime 2 due to be published?!!!
(Oh…and Mum is definitely aiming to be one of your ‘older’ readers….she wants me to get her a copy when it comes out in Paperback….I’ve already had to show her the photos of the bears!)

    • Xanthe Walter

Oh yay! I’ve been waiting for your review with some trepidation! I didn’t realise you’d already reviewed it on Amazon- are you Buttonboots? *g*.
I’m so glad it didn’t disappoint and that you are reading and re-reading – brilliant! I do have plans for a 2nd novel – there are lots of things to cover, including life-bonding and a certain other couple… ?
I’m wondering what your unresolved questions are about Rick and Matt…???!!!
I’m so glad it had you laughing out loud and shouting – a few people have mentioned yelling “Matty don’t do it!” LOL! I can guess at various places where people would want to shout that at him!
I LOVE your mum! Can’t wait for her to read the paperback – although – eep! Is she ready for all the spanking and gay sex?! LOL!
      Her bears are famous!

  4. sexycazzy

I has just finished reading Ricochet and it was just brilliant! I am a huge fan of Xanthe’s fanfiction stories, esp. in the BDSM universe, so when I heard that Xanthe was writing an original story based in the same universe, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed her other stories, esp. the Hiding in Plain Sight which is my all time favourites of Xanthe’s stories.
I am really pleased to say that I really enjoyed Ricochet very much. It touched me in ways that I never thought possible. Even though, Ricochet is set in the same BDSM universe as Xanthe’s fanfiction stories, it is written in a different style and more lighter, more romantic and very funny. Rick and Matt were jus awesome in the story and each one brought two very different prospectives coming from two different roles as a sub and a Dom and the inner struggles which comes with it. I even also loved the minor characters – esp. Daniel and Karl and I really hope that Xanthe will write more from this.
To summarise it up, buy Ricochet, you won’t regret it, esp if you have read her other stories, Xanthe is an excellent writer who will pull you into the book’s world – whether it be an original or a fanfiction story and I look forward to her next story!

    • Xanthe Walter

Thank you SO MUCH – and for leaving a review on Amazon too! That’s wonderful. I am so glad you enjoyed Ricochet. And yes – I definitely left the way open for that Daniel/Karl story…!

  5. Greyhound

I started reading your fanfiction last year and loved every story that I read (the Startgate Atlantis ones are my all-time favourites). When I found out you had a book that was coming out I could not wait to get my hands on it and I was hoping it would be just as good as all your other stories. And it was!!!
I loved the book; fell in love with the characters, very easily. Rick and Matt where so made for each other, sometimes I wanted to yell at the two of them for being so silly and stupid! But that make me love then even more. I so wanted Karl to ask Daniel out, I think they would be so great for each other. Was laugh at bits and yell at the kindle for other bits.
It was written so well, just like all your other work and I could not put it down for a minute. Please, please tell me that there will be a second book about the lives of Rick, Matt and all the others.
I can’t wait to read it again and again and again.
    A job very all done!!

    • Xanthe Walter

Thank you Greyhound! I am so delighted that you enjoyed it and fell in love with the characters. I definitely would like to write more – I left Karl and Daniel open on purpose for that reason, and there’s lifebonding to address as well ;-). Plus, i can imagine there’s some comedy to be had from a couple as clueless as Matt and Rick trying to help bring Karl and Daniel together *g*.
